A former legislator in the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, has successfully attained his liberty.

This development ensued upon the conclusion of his five-year incarceration at Kuje Prison.

In January, the Supreme Court validated the five-year sentence imposed on Lawan by the Court of Appeal.

Lawan was adjudicated and sentenced to imprisonment in 2021 for the acceptance of a bribe amounting to $500,000 from businessman Femi Otedola, who is the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.

In a unanimous ruling, a panel of five justices reaffirmed the 2022 verdict of the Court of Appeal, which sustained Lawan’s five-year sentence concerning only count three of the triad of charges for which he was prosecuted at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In the principal judgment authored by Justice John Okoro, but delivered by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, the apex court determined that Lawan’s appeal lacked merit and thus proceeded to dismiss it.

Nevertheless, a video disseminated on Tuesday depicted Lawan’s release from Kuje prison.
